How to Survive Thanksgiving: Obamacare Tips

November 25, 2013

Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy the company of your lovely family, to count your blessings and give thanks for what you have, and to argue about politics.

The good news – we’re here to help! Here are some things to keep in mind when your great uncle starts talking about how Obamacare is ruining our country:

  • People are benefitting from Obamacare –  In the past three years 20.4 million women with private insurance have already received preventive care that they used to have to pay for. And that’s just the beginning: by next year, 47 million women will receive preventive care with no co-pays. At least, they will if we don’t let opponents undermine or repeal reform.
  • Here in New York, over 257,000 applications have been completed! People need health insurance, and now they have more options and more affordable plans at their fingertips.
  • Eligible New Yorkers will pay an average of 53% less in premiums for Marketplace plans than for other plans.
  • Because Obamacare requires preventive care to be covered without co-pays, women can save as much as $600 per year on birth control alone. Obamacare opponents want to take that benefit away — even for the 58% of birth control pill users who use it, at least in part, for health purposes other than pregnancy prevention.
  • And for the record, no taxpayer money is used to fund privately insured birth control. This is about making sure your insurance company covers the care you need.
  • Millions of Americans will get help buying a plan. In fact, most individuals making less than $45,960 per year and most families of four making less than $94,200 per year can get financial help. And all new plans cover preventive care, including birth control and annual well-woman exams, for free
  • The government is working to fix the website issues, which we all hope happens fast. (And keep in mind, the New York marketplace hasn’t experienced the same technical difficulties as the federal marketplace)
  • In order to have coverage begin on January 1, the new deadline to enroll in new insurance plans is December 23. And if you don’t get enrolled by December 23, don’t worry. You can enroll through March 31.
  • If Obamacare is repealed, insurance companies will be able to charge customers more for pre-existing conditions (like pregnancy, being a survivor of domestic violence, or simply being a woman).
  • You might have heard that folks won’t be able to see keep seeing their preferred doctors – but that’s not true. In fact, thanks to Obamacare, you’re guaranteed access to your OB/GYN without a referral or approval from your insurance company (including at a Planned Parenthood health center). Standing against the health care law means standing between women and their doctors.

And as a last resort: If they won’t listen to you, maybe they’ll listen to the cast of the Hunger Games
