New York Governor Announces Historic Women’s Equality Act

January 11, 2013

Rather than our usual Friday news digest, I wanted to give you all a quick heads up about the exciting news we got this week.

In his State of the State address on Wednesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an historic, 10-point, Women’s Equality Act.  The Reproductive Health Act, which will ensure that abortion stays safe and legal, is part of the act, along with pay equity, ending pregnancy discrimination, and a host of other issues of vital importance to women across the state.

You can read more about it at Women Are Watching.

And, Politics on the Hudson has video of women’s groups, including Family Planning Advocates, NYCLU, and many others, responding to the Governor’s call to end discrimination against women in the Empire State.

Did you watch the State of the State?  Just watching on television, I felt the excitement when he shouted out his support for the Reproductive Health Act – and it’s the only part of the speech that got a standing ovation!

We’ll be in Albany on Monday to make sure that legislators are on board with the Governor’s call to pass the Reproductive Health Act as part of an equality agenda.  And we’ll write more about this agenda soon!
