Clinic Access Update & Friday Link Love

May 18, 2012

We’ve kept you updated on our work to pass a clinic access bill in Westchester County.  Well, after the bill passed the Board of Legislators in a 10-7 vote on May 7, after nearly 300 PPHP supporters emailed the County Executive asking him to sign the bill and more folks called and emailed on their own, and after we once again called on him to sign the bill in a press conference this morning with some of the legislators who voted to pass the bill… County Executive Rob Astorino vetoed the bill.  You can take action on this by calling his office at (914) 995-2900, tweeting @westchestergov or @robastorino, and also by voting in this poll at the White Plains Patch.  If you’re calling his office, just let him know that you think the Reproductive Health Care Facilities Access Act is necessary to prevent harassment and intimidation targeted at people who choose to come to a reproductive health center like a Planned Parenthood.

Jessica (and Vanessa) Valenti on how this moment is the “year of the young woman.”

Representative Nan Hayworth voted to pass the Violence Against Women Act.  You would think that would be a good thing, but no.  The House version of this bill not only strips out new provisions that would have expanded existing protections to include Native American women, women who are undocumented, women in same-sex relationships, and women who identify as transgender, but it actually even takes away current measures in place to protect immigrant women escaping abusive partners.  In voting for this bill, Representative Hayworth listened to the voices of hate, including a man who’s been arrested for beating his wife.

It’s National Women’s Health Week – let’s check out what Congress has done lately that is good for women’s health.

And for your Friday funny, the Huffington Post wants to know which of these Stephen Colbert clips is your favorite.  Check it out and vote for the one that makes you laugh the hardest.
