Tell President Obama To Protect Birth Control

November 16, 2011

Text BCREFUSAL to 69866.

I know, I know – sometimes it is hard to believe that we have to work so hard to protect birth control.  After all, birth control prevents pregnancy, and it’s almost universally popular.  In the United States 99% of sexually experienced women will have used birth control at some point in their lives, including 98%of sexually experienced Catholic women.

Using the birth control method that best fits your lifestyle is the surest way to prevent an unintended pregnancy.  So why shouldn’t everyone want everyone else to be able to access birth control – especially with no copays, if you have insurance?

After you text, you get a text back asking you to text CALL to be connected.

 But after the Department of Health and Human Services made it clear in July that the Affordable Care Act will, as hoped, make birth control available without any cost sharing, Catholic groups were suddenly up in arms.  They’re asking the White House to step in and change a simple clause that’s currently in the regulation (one that basically means people like church secretaries would be able to have health insurance that doesn’t cover birth control) into a much broader refusal clause that could affect millions of people.

Then, the system calls you back and you hear a short message before you are connected to the White House comments line.

Making this change would mean that millions of students, workers, and their families could lose the ability to access birth control without copays – even though they will still have health insurance.  At stake is protecting:

  • Nearly 800,000 people – and their dependents – who work at Catholic hospitals;
  • People employed at nearly 7,000 Catholic parochial schools;
  • People employed by organizations like Catholic Charities;
  • And, approximately 2 million students who attend religiously affiliated universities, potentially affecting their student health plan coverage, as well as the people who work at these universities and their dependents.

So what are you waiting for?  Text BCREFUSAL to 69866 now.  Tell President Obama to stand strong against pressure from a few, to protect basic health care for many.

    A quick update: apparently the White House comment line might only be open to take calls Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. If you want to take action in the evening or over the weekend, please check out to email the President. Thanks!
