Yesterday, I was proud to be one of the thousands of people at the Stand Up for Women’s Health Rally in Washington DC.  I was deeply moved by the outpouring of support for Planned Parenthood and the millions of women we serve. Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider — one in five women has received care at a Planned Parenthood health center in her lifetime.

It’s an outrage to shut down the government over an extreme proposal that would deny millions of women Pap tests, breast cancer screenings and birth control. Every year,  Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses nationwide provide:

  • nearly one million screenings for cervical cancer
  • 830,000 breast exams
  • affordable birth control to nearly 2.5 million patients
  • nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV testing.

Federal dollars do not fund abortions.   Every federal government dollar that Planned Parenthood receives pays for birth control, family planning visits, life-saving cancer screenings, annual exams, testing for HIV and other STI’s, and other basic preventive care. These are the services that would be affected by the anti-Planned Parenthood rider.  The  result will be millions of women losing access to preventive health care.

Attacking Planned Parenthood’s preventive health care hurts women, does not cut the deficit or fix the economy, and must be stopped.  Take a stand with us now.
