Sex: What I Believe

April 8, 2010

It’s all about sex.  Sure, my work includes lots of everyday tasks that I’m sure you do – mailings, events, conference calls, reading the news, etc.  But it all comes down to sex: empowering people to make the best sexual and medical decisions for themselves, and advocating for government to allow people to make personal, private decisions.

We’ve got a lot of fabulous educators here.  I’m not one of them but as an advocate I often wind up playing the role of educator with elected officials and other community members.  We’ve all got some great stories, but my favorite is Lisa trying to explain to a legislator that conception is not simultaneous with ejaculation.  I’m sure these are the moments that elected officials never dream will be part of their political careers, and I’m sure it makes some of them really uncomfortable.  But that’s why we’re here.

We’re here because…

…the decision of whether, when, and how many children to have is a deeply personal decision that no politician should ever interfere in.

…government has a responsibility to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves, especially when it comes to accessing basic health services like contraception.

…every person deserves accurate, unbiased information about their body and about human sexuality.

…no one deserves to feel shame about their body or about sex – having it, not having it, who and what they desire – or about outcomes of sex – STDs or unintended pregnancies.

…no one, ever, deserves violence.

That last one leads me to our comments policy… verbal violence is a real presence, especially on teh Interwebs.  So, please, when you comment here, be respectful.

Tell me: What do you believe?
